Day 37 - We stopped in Ketchikan for 5 Hours. We tried to catch the city bus but by the time we reached the bus stop two buses had filled to capacity and many people were waiting for the next bus. After waiting for an hour for the next bus, we decided to walk to downtown.
The weather was really warm and sunny, a welcome for the locals who had seen weeks and weeks of rain. It took us about 45 minutes to walk the 2 1/2 miles to Creek Street where we enjoyed a cute shopping area and some Chinese Food.
We asked our server at the Chinese restaurant (she was Caucasian) where we could see some Grizzlies/Brown bears. Se said there were a lot of black bears in peoples trash cans and at the dump, but any Brown bears that are ever found on the island are darted and shipped off to other islands. She said that some still occasionally swim back to the island that Ketchikan is on.
Cool town! They get massive amounts of rain here and there is not a lot of flat area, so many of the homes and buildings are built on steep rock. There are even some homes that are built on streets that are more bridges than streets!
